Broken Home Fibre Cable in Malaysia? How to Fix It Yourself

Last updated: November 2026 · By Dynamic EE Zone, Puchong

Quick answer: If the thin fibre cable between your wall socket and your fibre modem (ONT) is cut, bent or pulled out, you can usually replace it yourself with a new fibre patch cord that has the same connector type and colour. A replacement patch cord in Malaysia costs from about RM2 to RM10. If the damage is outside your house or inside the wall, contact your internet provider, because that cable belongs to them.

Step 1: Find out which cable is damaged

A home fibre connection in Malaysia usually has three parts:

PartWhere it isWho fixes it
Outdoor drop fibreFrom the pole or underground to your houseYour internet provider
Indoor fibre to the wall socketInside the wall or ceilingYour internet provider
Patch cordFrom the wall socket (fibre wall box) to your modem/ONTYou can replace it yourself

If the broken part is the short cable that plugs into the white fibre wall box on one end and the modem on the other, you can fix it in a few minutes.

Common signs of a broken patch cord:

  • The LOS or PON light on your modem is red or blinking
  • The cable has a sharp bend, a crushed spot or a chewed section (pets and rats are common culprits)
  • The connector head has snapped or come loose

Step 2: Check the connector type and colour

Look at both ends of your old cable. Almost all Malaysian home fibre uses SC connectors (square, push-in type), but the colour matters:

Connector colourTypeWhat it means
GreenSC/APCAngled polish. Must connect only to other APC (green) ports.
BlueSC/UPCFlat polish. Must connect only to other UPC (blue) ports.

Each end can be different. For example, one end green and the other blue. Buy a cable that matches both ends exactly.

⚠️ Never force a green (APC) connector into a blue (UPC) port or the other way round. It may seem to fit, but the signal loss will be high and it can damage the connector faces.

Not sure? Take a photo of both ends and send it to us on WhatsApp at 016-203 9260, and we will tell you which one to buy.

Step 3: Measure the length you need

Measure the distance from the wall box to the modem and add about 50 cm so the cable is never pulled tight. Common lengths are 1 m, 2 m, 3 m and 5 m. Fibre should never be bent sharply, so choose a longer cable rather than one that is too short.

Step 4: Replace the cable

  1. Switch off the modem.
  2. Unplug the old cable from the wall box and from the modem. Pull the connector body, not the cable.
  3. Do not look into the fibre port or the cable end. Fibre carries invisible laser light that can hurt your eyes.
  4. Remove the dust caps from the new cable and plug it in until it clicks.
  5. Turn the modem back on and wait 2 to 3 minutes. The LOS light should go off and the PON light should turn steady green.

If the LOS light is still red after replacing the patch cord, the problem is likely in the wall or outside the house. Call your internet provider.

How to find exactly where the cable is broken

If you cannot see the damage, a visual fault locator (VFL) helps. It is a pen that shines a bright red light into the fibre. Wherever the cable is broken or bent too sharply, you will see red light leaking out. Installers use VFLs every day, and they cost from about RM22. See our VFL range.

Frequently asked questions

Can I join a broken fibre cable with tape or glue?
No. Fibre is glass thinner than a hair. A broken fibre has to be fusion spliced with a machine or replaced. For a home patch cord, replacing it is cheaper and faster.

Is the cable from the wall to my modem the same for Unifi, Maxis, TIME and other providers?
They all use single-mode fibre with SC connectors, but the connector colour (APC green or UPC blue) can differ. Always match what is already installed.

Can I make the fibre cable longer?
Yes. Buy a longer patch cord, or use an SC adapter (coupler) to join two cords of the same type. A single longer cable gives a better signal than two joined cables.
